Two Typical Incendiaries

The reproductions on this page, furnished through the courtesy of Chief J. B. Gordon, of the Newport News, Va., fire department, show features of typical incendiaries.

Four mysterious fires having occurred in the latter part of November in Newport News, Chief Gordon became suspicious and, believing that they were of incendiary origin, consulted with Inspector Johnson of the police department. In consequence Inspector Johnson arrested Henry Moss and A. F. Bagley and it is alleged that Henry Moss confessed that he was’responsible for four of the fires on November 27, and for one on November 29. Both men pleaded guilty to setting fires in several places and were sentenced to 20 years in the state penitentiary on the charge of arson, having previously been examined by an alienist. The alienist decided that they were mentally responsible.
