Pflugerville Fire Chief Ron Moellenberg has been selected as the recipient of the 2021 Texas Fire Chiefs Association Lone Star Achievement Award for his 43 years of advancing emergency medical and fire services in Travis County.
Moellenberg was presented with the award at the association’s annual conference in College Station on Tuesday.
“Chief Moellenberg has established a tremendous legacy, a high bar for professionalism and service for future generations of fighters,” the group said in a statement.
Moellenberg also was recognized for several of his accomplishments, including guiding the department, also known as Travis County ESD No. 2, to receive a Class 1 rank from an independent insurance rating company, establishing a Fire Department-based EMS to improve transport in the community, and serving as a resource for the Texas State Association of Fire and Emergency Districts to allow the state’s 340 emergency services district to improve their services for more than 8 million Texans.
ESD No. 2 provides fire protection to approximately 140,000 residents in northern Travis County. Moellenberg joined the Pflugerville Volunteer Fire Department in 1978 and became the department’s first full-time chief in 1986. He transitioned the organization from a volunteer department to a fully paid department.
“This is not a job for me,” Moellenberg said. “It’s been a labor of love and commitment to my community and to have been recognized by fellow fire chiefs makes me want to go on making things better for all our citizens.”
The award also recognized Moellenberg’s experience as a U.S. Army clinical specialist, an immunization specialist with the state Health Department, a member of the Pflugerville City Council and a Boy Scout leader.
“He’s done a lot for this community and I am proud of him,” Assistant Fire Chief Nick Perkins said. “I’m glad to see his peers are, too.”
“I met Chief Moellenberg when I was 18 years old and I have learned many things from him over the years,” Perkins said. “He definitely instilled the meaning of service and excellence in what you do.”
