UT Fire Marshal Dies After Firefighter Skills Fitness Test

On August 26, 2011, South Davis Metro (UT) Fire Agency Fire Marshal Steve Cox was performing a firefighters skills fitness test at fire station 81 in Bountiful. During this skills test Steve became disoriented and complained of shortness of breath; he was immediately treated by fellow firefighters and taken to Lakeview Hospital. Steve became unresponsive and was admitted to the ICU at Lakeview.

On August 27, 2011, his condition became worse and his body organs started to shut down. He was flown by medical helicopter to the University of Utah Medical center for further care.

On August 28, 2011, at approximately 3:00pm Fire Marshal Steve Cox passed away. At this time Doctors have no answers as to what happened. An autopsy is being completed by the state medical examiner’s office to determine a cause of death.

This is the first Line of Duty Death at South Davis Metro Fire; we have counselors working with our employees during this traumatic time. Steve leaves behind his wife Karen, 3 sons, 1 daughter, and 1 step daughter, all married. Steve worked as the Fire Marshal for the South Davis Metro Fire Agency.  He has been in the fire service for 22 years.

Thursday September 1, 2011 at the Bountiful-Woods Cross Regional Center located at 835 North 400 East in North Salt Lake City from 5:30pm till 9:00pm

Friday September 2, 2011 services will be at the Bountiful-Woods Cross Regional Center starting at 11:00am, no viewing before the service.

Burial location is the Bountiful Cemetery 2224 South 200 West in Bountiful.

In accordance with the policies of the Regional Center, any type of photography or video recording equipment is not allowed inside the building.
