VA Firefighter Killed in Crash

A volunteer firefighter was killed in an apparatus crash Monday morning in Accomack County, Virginia.

News reports indicate that the firefighter was killed in a single-vehicle crash involving a fire engine.

Few other details were available as of this writing. An investigation is ongoing. WVEC.com (http://bit.ly/LlWciB) reported that the firefighter was a member of the Bloxom Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company.

Update (7/17/2012): The victim of the crash has been identified as David Raymond Chew Jr. Chew, 30, was ejected when the apparatus crashed and overturned after the driver lost control of the vehicle, according to The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/O9oQHF).

Chew was not wearing his seat belt and died on impact. The driver, James Richard Lambirth, was taken to a Maryland hospital and treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.
