Volunteer Firemen to Disband

Fire Commissioner Johnson of New York will have to make arrangements for companies of the city fire department in the former Newtown section of Queens by Dec 1, or the districts of Elmhurst, Forest Hills, Corona. Maspeth and Ridgewood will be without fire protection. The volunteers who have been doing duty ever since consolidation have decided, through their board of managers, to end their duty at that date. Nearly all of the twenty six volunteer companies in the district have agreed to this arrangement. Several that are holding out are expected to be brought into line. The movement to end dutv at this date is being led by Wandowenock Engine Company No. 1, one of the oldest companies in the ward. In the Corona district Hook and Ladder Company 6, which has been doing the double duty of a hook and ladder company and a hose company, has refused anv longer to do duty as a hose company, and will only do such duty as their charter requires.
