At Grand Rapids, Mich., there was added to the distribution system of the water works the past year 5,565 miles of mains, making a total at this date of 122,911 miles, with 1,153 fire hydrants. The amount expended on the water works for the year was $46,733,22. The greater portion of this expenditure was for the new force-main for the high service. This new force-main has increased the pressure on the high service,besides reducing the pressure atthepumps. There has been expended on the works to date $1,323,309.22. The bonded indebtedness is $855,000. The daily average consumption of water has been 11,369.588 gallons—an increase of 4 15-100 per cent over the previous year. Number of services in use is 7,389, supplying 27,944 fixtures. The income from the water works has been $89 779-55; the cost of maintenance and operation, $39,470.24; annual interest on the water bonds, $39,125. The cost of extending the mains was $40,761.19; expended on the dam across the river, $1,111.25; for new meters and setting, $153.28. The total cost to pump 1,000,000 gallons of water into the high and low systems was $3.20. The total number of gallons of water pumped into the high * system for the past year was 1.606,774,577 gallons. The daily average of water pumped in the high system was 4,402,122 gallons.
