WATERWORKS CHANGES AT COLUMBUS.
According to the Columbus, Ohio, Dispatch the incoming administration in that city will make important changes in the waterworks department. That paper, professing to have obtained its information from a “reliable source.” writes that Superintendent Jerry O’Shaughnessy will be retired as head of the department, and that the “whole scheme of conducting waterworks affairs” will be changed. “Instead of allowing it to remain under the supervision of one man as in the past, it is to be divided into two distinct ana separate subdepartments, one of which will he under the direction of a superintendent who will he a political appointee chosen by reason of his qualifications only, and the other under the direction of a technical head who shall be both an expert hydraulic and mechanical engineer. I lie office duties, operation of the system, collection of the water rents and all business pertaining to the department will fall to the lot of the superintendent, and the care of the huge new plants already built or under way. such as the dam, the filtration plant, sewage disposal plant and other technical apparatus, will be under the absolute charge of the expert engineer.”
