WHICH IS THE OLDEST PAID FIRE DEPARTMENT IN THE UNITED STATES?

Seven Grecian cities fought for the honor of being the birthplace of Homer. In the same way, according to a correspondent of FIRE AND WATER, there is a dispute among some of the large cities in Amerca as to which of them was the first to have a full paid fire department. That of Brooklyn was organized in 1869, and that of New York city about one year previously. Former Chief Thomas F. Nevins holds that the latter is the oldest in the country, and as he received FIRE AND WATER’S gold medal for the longest continuous service as chief engineer in a full paid fire department, his opinion is entitled to great reppect. Mr. Nevinp thinkp that the fire dppartmeut of Cincinnati is the oldest part-paid department in the country.

Any information onithe subject would be interesting to the readers of FIRE AND WATER.
