Woman Fire Inspector Causes 37 Arrests
Mrs. Sarah W. Christopher, the only woman inspector in the fire prevention bureau of the New York fire department, last week made a report to Commissioner Johnson of her last week’s work. Mrs. Christopher caused the arrest of 37 persons, 20 of them employed by members of the Cloak, Suit and Skirt Manufacturers’ Protective Association. She had five cases in the Court of Special Sessions, obtaining live convictions.
Four of the men arraigned were lined $10 each for smoking on the premises, and the fifth was fined $20 for the same offense. A new dam is about completed for Canonsburg, Pa., which, when full, will contain from 90,000,000 to 100,000,000 gallons of water, an amount sufficient to run the town for three months, although no rain at all should fall during that time. And allowing for a consumption of 1,000,000 gallons a day.
