An 82-year-old woman died in a house fire late Friday in the Town of Wheatfield, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office said.
The sheriff’s office communications received a report at 11:47 p.m. of heavy smoke and flames at 3992 Baisch Drive, and was told an elderly woman who lived at the home had not responded.
Sheriff’s deputies and a North Tonawanda police officer arrived and attempted to enter the home, but were unable to due to the heavy smoke and fire, according to the sheriff’s office.
Firefighters arrived and entered the home and found the 82-year-old woman on the first floor. They attempted live-saving measures but she was pronounced dead the scene.
Members of the Adams, St. Johnburg, Bergholz and Shawnee volunteer fire companies, and the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Fire Department extinguished the fire.
No damage estimate was immediately available. The sheriff’s department said the name of the woman who died was being withheld until her family could be notified.
The Niagara County Fire Investigation Unit is investigating the cause of the fire.
