AKRON, Ohio — Three children had to jump from the second floor of their apartment building Monday morning in order to escape a fire, authorities say.

The children, ages 6, 11 and 13, all were uninjured after they fled the fire by climbing out of a second-floor window, onto an awning and then jumping to the ground, according to a news release from the Akron Fire Department.

Cleveland.com news partner WKYC Channel 3 reports that at least one person assisted the children by encouraging them to jump to safety.

The fire occurred at a residence on the 700 block of Druid Walk in the East Akron neighborhood. The fire reportedly was put out quickly and EMS crews gave the children shelter until family members arrived. The Red Cross also is assisting the family.

No other details on the fire were released.
