A 74-year-old woman who the Baltimore County Fire Department initially referred to as in critical condition died on the floor of her home Wednesday.

Firefighters searched for Janet Pereira when they learned a woman was unaccounted for in the one-alarm blaze in the home on the 1800 block of Marshall Road, according to a statement from the department released Thursday. They found Pereira minutes later.

One firefighter got minor burns while extinguishing the fire, the department said. The fire was under control at 12:40 p.m.

Investigators ruled the fire accidental, “caused by the failure of an electrical extension cord,” the statement said. The department previously described “hoarding conditions” inside the home, which did not have functional smoke detectors, according to Thursday’s release.
