Jan. 12—Firefighters battled a blaze Sunday afternoon that destroyed a single-family home on Nichols Road in Peterborough. The sole occupant at the time was able to get out. No one was injured.
Peterborough Fire and Rescue crews responded to the fire at 1:24 p.m. and found heavy fire from the breezeway when they arrived on the scene. A second alarm and additional crews were requested. The fire was under control by 2:05, fire officials said.
Crews from Jaffrey, Antrim, Bennington, Hancock, Greenfield, Dublin, Milford and Southwestern New Hampshire District Fire Mutual Aid assisted in battling the fire while Temple, Keene and Ringe firefighters covered the Peterborough station, fire officials said.
Investigators said accidental and improper disposal of wood stove ashes caused the fire. The house is a total loss, officials said.
The Red Cross is assisting the tenant.
