Two former Miami-Dade County firefighters were arrested Friday in connection with a fatal training exercise that took place last June in Virginia Gardens.
Rafael Fernandez, 52, and Francisco Camero, 48, both face charges of manslaughter and culpable negligence following an incident that claimed the life of 28-year-old Fabian Camero, Francisco’s son, during an unauthorized live fire training exercise.
According to a 15-page warrant, the training exercise was conducted at a three-story building in Virginia Gardens without proper authorization.
Fabian, who was not a firefighter, was given inadequate gear, the warrant charges. He died from smoke inhalation after his breathing apparatus failed. Camero was invited to gain experience in firefighting.
Investigators also allege that Fernandez misled 911 operators by claiming everyone had safely exited the building, while three individuals, including Fabian, remained trapped inside.
