MA Fire Department Orders Mall Closed Over Roof Load

The North Attleboro Fire Department responded to a significant water leak incident at the Emerald Square Mall on Friday, February 16.

The leaks triggered a fire alarm activation around 1:30 p.m. The initial alarm came from a smoke detector on the third floor. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered water leaking through the ceiling, affecting multiple areas, including a vestibule and the food court, WPRI reported.

The leaks were attributed to a combination of heavy rain, snow, and ice accumulation on the mall’s roof, which is over 30 years old. Out of caution, the fire department ordered the facility closed due to the snow load on the roof and the number of leaks.

By Saturday morning, February 17, the mall was deemed safe to reopen after a thorough inspection.
