Nearly two dozen people were injured in a fire on Tuesday in a luxury high-rise building on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, according to reports. Among the injured was a newborn baby and four Fire Department of New York (FDNY) firefighters.
The New York Post reports that the fire first began inside the kitchen of an apartment on the 24th floor of a 41-story condominium at 515 East 72nd. The fire spread because of an open apartment door, which led to flames spreading from the fire apartment into the hallway.
Firefighters arrived on scene within three minutes and found two occupants unconscious, the report went on to say. They were transported in critical condition.
“It turned a kitchen fire – a one-room kitchen fire — into a fire that spread throughout the upper floors of the building,” FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief Joseph Ferrante told reporters of the open door.
