Fire destroyed an eight-bay garage belonging to the Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA) Sunday night.
The fire completely destroyed the Auburn facility. Among the losses were four plow trucks, a loader, a traffic control truck, a three-quarter-ton pickup, and a box truck—along with essential tools and equipment, Newscenter Maine reports.
The timing of the fire is challenging, as Maine faces winter conditions requiring constant plowing. However, the MTA has assured that a contingency plan is in place to prevent disruption.
While the latest fire may not impact drivers using the Maine Turnpike, it has created logistical challenges for workers. The Auburn garage was their only access to water and indoor plumbing along that section of the highway.
A similar fire in 2021 destroyed a garage in Litchfield, causing similar losses—including five plow trucks. The cause of that fire was never determined.
