Sacramento (CA) Firefighters Save Premature Baby Born on Highway

A baby born prematurely on the side of Highway 99 in South Sacramento is now thriving at home just in time for the holidays.

On June 22, 2024, Jazmin Quijano, 22 weeks and 3 days pregnant, went into labor unexpectedly while en route to UC Davis Medical Center. She delivered her baby before arriving at the hospital.

Sacramento Fire Department’s Station 6 crew rushed to the scene and provided critical care. Using CPR, warming techniques, and rapid coordination with UC Davis Medical Center, the firefighters stabilized the tiny newborn—described as being no larger than an avocado—and transported her to UC Davis Children’s Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

The NICU team cared for the baby for over 146 days. Today, the baby is home and healthy.
