STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Four people are dead after a boat capsized in the waters off Staten Island, according to officials.
The incident was reported on Sunday around noon in the vicinity of Front Street in Stapleton and the Ambrose Channel, when members of the NYPD Harbor Unit, FDNY and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a call for a “vessel in distress” with multiple individuals who were aboard, police said.
Five individuals were removed from the “overturned vessel” and transported to Staten Island University Hospital and Monmouth County Hospital in New Jersey. Three were pronounced deceased. One person was listed in critical conditional and another person was listed in stable condition, according to an NYPD spokesman. Family of the victims later confirmed the death toll had risen to four.
No additional information was available on the victims.
The investigation remains ongoing, the NYPD spokesman said.
