Feb. 2—WATERBURY — Three children, two adults and a firefighter were transported to the hospital after an early morning blaze Sunday at a Gail Drive residence, officials said.
Waterbury Assistant Chief Javier Lopez said at 2:07 a.m., firefighters responded to the flames at a single-family house in the 100 block. Lopez said firefighters were met with heavy smoke and flames, prompting them to initiate “an aggressive interior attack.”
“Conditions deteriorated and companies were pulled from the building and attacked the fire defensively,” Lopez said. “The fire was placed under control at 6:30 a.m.”
Five occupants, two adults and three children, escaped the house before firefighters arrived, Lopez said. He said that all were brought to the hospital for treatment.
A firefighter was also injured after falling through the first floor into the house’s basement, Lopez said. The firefighter was rescued by fellow firefighters and treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital.
Lopez said the children and firefighter have been released from the hospital but the two adults remain hospitalized. He said the children were released to other family members.
The house was completely destroyed in the fire, Lopez said.
Firefighters had to return to the site of the blaze at 7 p.m. Sunday, Lopez said, as a small fire in the structure had started. He said crews remained on scene to put out hot spots.
The fire remains under investigation.
