CA Firefighters Rescue Four Kids, Including Baby Thrown from Balcony

Alameda County (CA) firefighters rescued three children plus a baby tossed by the mother to a waiting firefighter below from an apartment fire Tuesday.

The two-alarm fire gutted a San Leandro apartment building and displaced 12 people early Tuesday morning.

Responding firefighters encountered heavy fire and black smoke in a downstairs unit that blocked visibility in a stairwell, according to a Mercury News report (http://bit.ly/zGIlw6).

A woman and her children became trapped in an upstairs unit. The woman tossed her baby down from a balcony to a firefighters, then jumped to the ground. Firefighters searched upstairs and located two other children in a back bedroom and rescued them. Then another child jumped from an open window and landed on a car.

The victims suffered minor injuries from smoke inhalation. They were treated at a hospital and released.
