Hazmat kits

Two hazmat kits have been introduced by Sensidyne/Gastec for fast field determination of airborne contaminants during chemical spill emergencies. The Standard Hazmat Kit includes 13 boxes of detector tubes that provide a wide range of detection capabilities, a model 800 piston pump, extension hose, shoulder bag, and logic chart.

The Deluxe Hazmat Kit adds a hard shell case, air flow indicator kit, flow finish indicator, and a capacity for holding up to 24 boxes of tubes.

Battery switches

The Guest Company offers a complete line of battery switches with units to handle the extra heavy starting loads of larger vehicles, diesels included. The heaviest duty on/off switch has a rating of 600 amps continuous, 1,000 amps momentary with alternator disconnect.

Guest’s battery switch and selector system provides the option of either battery, both batteries in parallel, or complete disconnect of both batteries.

There is positive disconnect of batteries when the vehicle is not in operation. Then all circuits are isolated, insuring against electrical fire and explostion hazards.

Educational material

Dray Publications Inc. introduces new materials that are designed to enhance the local firefighter image while promoting fire prevention. This includes a prevention poster that features a true-life fire rescue.

Other new materials for community, business, and school educational programs feature a 6-foot firefighter cutout for program displays and holding signs, a new fire engine cutout with a working aerial ladder, a fire extinguisher folder, a bumper sticker, a telephone sticker, and a campagin booklet, which pictures survival action beforeduring-after a fire.

Emergency medical product

A new product that improves the administration and training of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) has been announced by Auralogic Inc.

Called the CPR Prompter, the patentpending new product is a small, portable, battery-powered instrument programmed with the American Heart Association’s approved CPR emergency procedures sequence. Spoken instructions guide the user through the sequences, prompting next steps and providing cadences where appropriate—for both adult and infant victims.

The CPR Prompter has two applications. The first is for use by CPR rescuers during an actual emergency. The second application is for use in CPR training, where repetitive listening to the instructions will reinforce learning and increase retention.

New lighting instrument

Pelican Products introduces the Swatlite, a heavy-duty flashlight for sports, industrial, and home use. Swatlite features the first patented dual filament krypton safety lamp and the first flashlight with highand lowbeam capability, according to the company.

The Swatlite is also shock-resistant, Oring sealed, and watertight to 2,000 feet.

New helmet

Cairns & Brother has introduced a new version of its N660 Phoenix helmet. New features include: a high-performance PPC shell for extra toughness and the protective Cairns M600 overcrown impact cap, which helps spread and reduce impact loads in stages.

The helmet also incorporates Cairns’ breathing apparatus interface in the lining front band, a protective wraparound fourinch high-pivot faceshield, two-piece nylon chinstrap with postman’s slide, and new cushion liner with Nomex earlaps.

High-pressure air cushions

ZUMRO Inc. announces that its line of high-pressure cushions has been expanded and covers a full range: 10, 22, 42, and 68 tons.

Like their low-pressure cushions, the new line is made of Kevlar and neoprene rubber.

Portable two-way radio

A new 16-channel programmable frequency-synthesized portable two-way FM radio has been introduced by Midland Land Mobile Radio, division of Midland International Corporation.

The new radios, which feature a frontpanel keypad and liquid crystal display (LCD), have a rated RF power output of 5 watts, keypad switchable to 1 watt. VHF models are available covering the frequency range 136-174 MHz.

With the 1,000-mAh battery pack, the Midland 16-channel portable will provide 8 hours of operation at 5 watts with a 5-5-90 duty cycle, according to the company.

High-rise rescue system

Henke Machine Inc. introduces the MultiStory Transporter (MST), a new high-rise firefighting and rescue system.

The system consists of a portable, external, high-rise elevator designed to scale a burning building in minutes. It quickly carries firefighters and equipment below, beside, or above the fire, while at the same time providing trapped building occupants a safe means of escape.

Telescoping masts

TMD, a division of the Will-Burt Company, introduces a new line of pneumatic telescoping masts for the fire and emergency vehicle industry.

The masts are made with a series of highstrength, light-weight aluminum tubes fitted inside one another for a low profile collapsed height that will extend up to 34 feet. These telescoping masts support emergency lighting to extended heights.

New communication system

Magnum Distribution Inc. introduces the HM-200W Ear-Mike, which is designed to interface directly with any hardwire intercom system via existing phone jacks. Each unit consists of a microphone, which is also a speaker, that fits in the ear, and a small interface module that comes with a PushTo-Talk (PTT) switch.

The EM-200W allows its user to communicate fully while wearing a face mask or respirator, and if worn under protective clothing, the PTT switch can be activated through the clothing to allow normal twoway communication.

Underwater rescue suits

Survival International introduces their new cold water Rescue/Exposure suits, which are worn by emergency personnel during underwater rescues.

The suits feature an “inflation ring,” which can be detached from the suit and attached under the victim’s arms. The inflation ring provides flotation for a person up to 300 pounds.

The Rescue/Exposure suits are used by fire and police teams who carry them on their rescue boats or in rescue vehicles.

New firefighting system

The Fligh Rise System, from Street Designs, enables a crew to reach the fire floor with 100 feet of hose, a change of air bottles, and other necessary equipment.

The System consists of three parts: The utility bag (UEB) has shoulder straps that allow the weight of the hose and other equipment to be shared between two men.

The two bottle carrier (BC-100) allows a man to carry two spare air bottles in one hand or over the shoulder.

The hose handle (HH-84) enables a single firefighter to move 100 feet of hose and nozzle.
