Firefighters Respond to Nitrogen Leak at Detroit Soda Plant

Detroit firefighters responded to an incident involving hazardous materials at a pop plant Monday evening on the city’s east side.

Crews were called to the 3500 block of Gratiot just after 7 p.m. for a report of a fire, said Detroit Fire Department spokesperson Corey McIsaac.

“There was no fire, but Hazmat was called for a nitrogen leak,” McIsaac said in a statement.

The incident happened at a Faygo plant located at 3579 Gratiot, according to a WDIV-TV Channel 4 report.

The situation was “mitigated,” and the scene was cleared by 8 p.m., McIsaac said. There were no reported injuries.

Details weren’t immediately available. The incident remained under investigation.

Faygo, founded in Detroit, celebrates its 118th anniversary this year.
