Two teenagers were found dead by police in Hoffman Estates early Sunday in a case of carbon monoxide poisoning, according to medical examiners.
The Hoffman Estates Police Department, along with the Fire Department, responded to a report of two people who appeared to be unconscious and locked inside a vehicle at the 200 block of East Berkeley Lane around 12:37 a.m. Officials found two teenagers — a 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl — unresponsive inside the vehicle. Police said the two were given lifesaving measures after authorities forced open the vehicle and and extracted them.

Both teenagers were then transported to St. Alexius Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead.
The Cook County medical examiner identified the teenagers as 17-year-old Yeferson A. Flores Ramos of Hoffman Estates and 16-year-old Litzy Flores of Carpentersville. The medical examiner’s office later said the cause of death was “carbon monoxide toxicity” through “inhalation of automobile exhaust from running vehicle” and listed the death as an accident.
