Michigan City (IN) firefighters and police joined with other rescuers to help save a young boy who was trapped for three and a half hours under 11 feet of sand.
The boy is “doing well” in recovery at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, according to The News Dispatch (http://bit.ly/18gpw7N).
The rescue effort began at 4:40 p.m. Friday when 911 received a call that a six-year-old boy had fallen into a hole in the sand dune at Mount Baldy and was covered by the sand.
At one point, as many as 25 first responders were digging at the hole and eventually only the tops of their heads could be seen as they worked. Excavators were called in to and used backhoes to remove the sand.
An estimated 400 tons of sand was moved out of the hole before the boy was found.
