CINCINNATI, Ohio — Firefighters were able to rescue a dog from between the walls of a home’s garage after it had been missing for five days.
A homeowner on Sunday heard the dog named Gertie crying behind a cinderblock wall in his garage and called the fire department, according to a post on the Cincinnati Fire Department’s Facebook page. A firefighter used a sledgehammer to make a hole in the wall and pulled the dog to safety.
WCPO Channel 9 reports Gertie’s owners had placed signs in the neighborhood after the dog had gone missing. The owners believed the dog might have been taken.
Instead, the dog had fallen through the roof of a hillside garage that had become dilapidated, according to Connie Frick, one of Gertie’s owners. Gertie became caught between the cinderblock wall and an older wall behind it.
Frick tells WXIX Channel 19 that Gertie, a 35-pound white terrier mix, was tired but appeared to be OK after the ordeal.
“She was so excited,” Frick tells WCPO. “Everybody was loving on her. The firefighters were so happy.”
