Firefighters Respond to Major Fire in Croatia

Firefighters responded last week to a fire at a plastics depot in Croatia that officials fear may pose environtmental risks, according to news reports.

Crews responded October 4, 2023, to a fire in the town of Osijek that had spread from the original building to a structure where chemicals were stored, according to Reuters.com.

The incident prompted a shelter-in-place recommendation for residents, and officials expressed concern that smoke from the fire was carcinogenic, the report said.

The report said three firefighters were injured while trying to extinguish the fire.

According to Milenko Korica with Sarvaš Volunteer Fire Department, the fire at Drava International Ltd. was the largest fire in the history of that region and maybe even in the country. The agency shared photos of the incident on its Facebook page.
