A grandmother was killed while seven people, including five children, are recovering after a fire broke out at a Lower Chichester home Saturday morning, reports NBC Philadelphia.
The woman, identified as 62-year-old Doris Morgan, was sleeping in the back porch of the house on the 100 block of Fronefield Avenue when the fire began. She later died from her injuries.
Morgan’s daughter Shahara Martin, son-in-law Ahmad Martin and her five grandchildren, who range in ages from one to eight, were also inside the home at the time.
Ahmad managed to get his children out of the home with the help of his neighbor Nick Wells. Wells told NBC10 he ran over to the house after hearing the screams of Ahmad and his children. He then grabbed a nearby tricycle to break the basement window.
“The father and the kids were actually in the basement,” Wells said. “The father was breaking the windows out. So I ran up, grabbed the bike and started busting the windows out too.”
Wells was able to grab each child and pull them to safety.
