Hazmat Incident at Indianapolis Pool Sends At Least 71 to Hospital

A chemical spill at an Indianapolis (IN) pool sent at least 71 people to hospitals today, according to a report on Indystar.com (http://indy.st/KPX5pt).

Following some repairs, a pump suddenly turned on and poured too much of a water-purification component into the pool at the Garfield Park Aquatic Center.

Sargent. Derrick Sayles of the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) said a chemical called ACID Magic inadvertently spilled into the pool a few minutes before 2 p.m. The chemical is one component used to purify pool water.

When released, the chemical does not cause burns, but people react as if they were breathing smoke, the IFD told reporters.

People in the pool, including children, were overcome by the effects of the chemical, and symptoms including coughing and vomiting, according to Sayles.
