Man in Stable Condition After Niagara Falls Rescue

Niagara Falls emergency officials rescued a man Monday who plunged over Niagara Falls and survived an apparent suicide attempt, reports The Associated Press (http://bit.ly/KReRn4).

The man had climbed over a railing near the Horseshoe Falls, on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, and jumped into the Niagara River. He was seriously injured going over Niagara Falls and surfaced in the lower river basin, reports the news outlet. He was able to make it to shore on his own, likely swept there by an eddy, fire officials said.

Rescuers had to rappel down a steep and rocky gorge to reach the man, whom they didn’t immediately know whether he had gone over the brink or entered the water at the base. Seven rescuers struggled to haul a basket carrying the man back up the cliff to a point where it could be lifted with ropes suspended from an aerial truck.

The entire rescue lasted nearly two hours. The man was then airlifted to the hospital.
