Off-Duty Firefighters Rescue Man Trapped in Mud in FL

While on vacation, three firefighters rescued a man who had been trapped for several hours in the mud in a Florida swamp.

Cedar Hammock Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Leigh Hollins, a regular Fire Engineering contributor, fellow Cedar Hammock Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Sam Collier, and Lt. Jim Grote of Southern Manatee Fire Rescue participated in the rescue, according to a report on brandenton.com.

Hollins indicated that the trio kept hearing a faint call for help, then noticed a head and arms in the swamp. The firefighters threw a rope to the 75-year-old victim, who was covered up to his neck in mud, and told him to tie it around himself, then hauled him out of the swamp and onto a boat.
