Senate urged to focus on role of fire service in Natural Disaster legislation
In a letter to the Senate Committee on Government Affairs, Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D-MD), co-chairman of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, has asked that there be “a strong focus on the role of the fire service” in any natural disaster legislation. He noted that the fire service “clearly has demonstrated its highly effective response capabilities and first-hand knowledge of mitigation efforts.”
The legislation–S. 1043, Natural Disaster Protection and Insurance Act, and H.R. 1856, Natural Disaster Protection Partnership Act (see News In Brief, June 1996)–is under consideration by Senate and House committees; revisions are expected to be completed sometime this summer, according to Michael Smith, CFSI director of government affairs.
