Sep. 16—A person died Saturday morning after an accident involving a Myrtle Beach Fire Department vehicle.
A Myrtle Beach Fire Department emergency vehicle collided with a car while traveling north on South Kings Highway at 5:46 a.m. Saturday in response to a structure fire call, according to an email from Capt. Jonathan Evans.
The patient received emergency medical care from fire personnel but died at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, the release said.
Peter Pulkkinen, 95, of Myrtle Beach, died of injuries sustained in the vehicle collision, according to an email from Horry County Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden.
The two Myrtle Beach Fire Department employees involved in the accident were not injured.
South Carolina Highway Patrol is leading the investigation.
The fire department pickup truck was traveling north on U.S. 17 with its lights and sirens activated, according to Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway with the SCHP.
The driver of a 2019 Ford Sedan attempted to enter onto U.S. 17 from 15th Avenue when the vehicle was struck on driver’s side of the vehicle, Ridgeway said.
“Our hearts go out to everyone involved,” Evans wrote.
