A stretch of Interstate 84 was closed to drivers headed west of Hood River for hours following multiple crashes Thursday morning and afternoon.

It reopened around 8 p.m.

Winter road conditions contributed to more than eight crashes starting at 10:45 a.m., authorities said. The crashes occurred in a four mile segment near Multnomah Falls, leading authorities to close the interstate’s westbound lanes between that area and Hood River.

Four individuals with minor injuries were taken to local hospitals, according to Oregon State Police. Approximately two dozen cars were directly involved in the pileup and likely needed to be towed, according to Oregon Department of Transportation spokesperson Ryan McCrary.

One SUV caught on fire, authorities reported.

“Everyone was able to get out of the SUV,” the Multnomah County Sheriff’s office posted on X at 12:39 p.m. “Responders are going car by car.”

Officials initially reported that 100 vehicles were involved in the pileup. McCrary clarified that most of those vehicles were in the restricted road segment but were not directly involved in crashes.

Hazardous road conditions also led to road closures in eastern Oregon. Segments of I-84 between La Grande and Ontario were closed in the early afternoon but were reopened by 3:30 p.m.
